Understanding ISO

Key Objectives:

  • Sky should be in frame. At least 2/3rds of the frame should be sky only.
  • No city lights
  • 1 frame only. shot on tripod. in 6 different ISOs,
  • 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200.
  • Goal: Achieve the perfect exposure.
My Learnings:
  • When the ISO level was low (100,200), the picture was really dark until I reduced the shutter speed to almost 15 seconds to let the light in the sensor.
  • When the ISO level gradually increased, the shutter speed gradually reduced, coming to 1/5 seconds when the ISO was 6400.
  • ISO controls the sensitivity of the sensor the light. Low ISO settings seem ideal for bright sunny days or afternoons with scorching heat.
  • 400-800 ISO is better suited for normal light conditions (cloudy) whereas 1600+ ISO is best for low light conditions (night times)
  • Also, higher ISO lowers the dpi, resulting in grainier pictures.
  • Aperture was kept at it's lowest setting to let maximum light into the sensor.

Shutter Speed: 15        Aperture: 6.3       ISO: 100

Shutter Speed: 6         Aperture: 5.6       ISO: 200

Shutter Speed: 3.2        Aperture: 5.6       ISO: 400

Shutter Speed: 1.6        Aperture: 5.6       ISO: 800

Shutter Speed: 0.6        Aperture: 5.6       ISO: 1600

Shutter Speed: 1/2        Aperture: 5.6       ISO: 3200

Shutter Speed: 1/5        Aperture: 5.6       ISO: 6400
